Composting Tool: Rotating Compost Bins

Composting is a process of recycling. Organic wastes like food, manure, coffee grounds, leaves, grass trimmings, paper, and worms are placed inside the bin then bacteria, fungi, and actinomycetes with the help of oxygen speeds up the process. Composting is very effective in nurturing not only the garden but nature as well. Various tools for composting are invented and continuously enhanced with its new designs to speed up composting process. Commercial bins are available but expensive; people going for do-it-yourself composting bins requiring minimal effort with various advantages such as saving a lot of money and the composting bins are fit for the available space. This tool makes backyard composting easy.

The Easy compost bins are made up of rotating barrel, water can or garden hose, yard and kitchen waste, and a small amount of compost. Before starting, one must find a shady spot which has an easy access to the kitchen as well. For large pieces, chop or break it (this is done so that the microorganisms can act on it easily). Add fallen leaves, straw, sawdust, wood chips and shredded paper; moisten the material with ample amount of water. Then, subsequently add grass clippings, food scraps, coffee grounds etc.  One is to one ratio is followed for faster results.  Microorganisms are introduced as small amount of garden soil is also added. Rotate it for a number of times until all the ingredients are mixed completely.  After the mixing, check the moisture level, it must be like of a sponge, if not- then water is added to achieve the proper moisture level. Check the bin often particularly its moisture level, unpleasant odor must not be produced. If the unpleasant odor develops, add more fallen leaves, straw, sawdust, wood chips and shredded paper. If the bin is heavy for mixing, stop adding ingredients.

These bins come in various shapes, sizes and colors.  The plain old backyard pile of leaves and other wastes are all put into this rotating bin for composting. The size of the bin is proportional to the amount of compost produced but as what is mentioned above, the location and space must be the foremost consideration if one intends to make his own. It is not only a tool for gardeners but to all who aims to protect nature.
